"Hurt Locker" File-sharing Suits Moving Ahead with Subpoenas

September 3, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

A few months back, Voltage Studios (the indie studio that made “The Hurt Locker”) began legal proceedings against those seen illegally sharing the movie online. 5,000 “John Doe” lawsuits were filed by the film’s producers. Voltage Pictures has now started moving ahead with the next phase of the legal process. Several ISP customers have received notices that their provider has been subpoenaed, and must turn over their names to Voltage’s lawyers.? A number of small movie studios have been working with the law firm of Dunlap, Grubb & Weaver. This firm is managing the cases in exchange for a portion of any settlements of judgments that result. The ACLU and EFF have both strongly opposed this action.

The 404 659: Where we check out the bubbles on that one (podcast)

(Credit: Facebook) Facebook is about to get a whole lot creepier. A small group of users are beta-testing a new “subscribe” button located under users’ profile pictures that could make Facebook stalking as simple as a single click. The button is a lot like “following” someone on Twitter and here’s how it works: If you click the “subscribe” button, all of that user’s activities, from new pictures to status updates to videos and links, will show up in your notifications. Few details have been released so far, but we’re interested in knowing if the service will show you who’s stalking your profile or if you can subscribe to non-friends, which would take the creep factor up to a solid 10.

Samsung Officially Announces the Galaxy Tab

September 2, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

It’s hardly? a secret ?that Samsung’s been working on a 7-inch tablet device called the “Galaxy Tab.” Still, it’s always nice to have confirmation, and that’s exactly what we got today from Samsung. While we’re not sure that we agree with the press release that the Tab is a “new category of device” (prepare for the initial wave of iPad comparisons in 3… 2… 1…) it does have a pretty compelling featureset, including Flash support, DivX certification, and front- and rear-facing cameras (1.3 and 3 megapixels, respectively). Inside, the Tab’s packing a 1GHz Cortex A8 proc, a PowerVR SGX540 GPU and 512 MB of RAM. Every version of the tab can connect to Wi-Fi and 3G networks (with a data plan, of course.) It’ll be available in a 16GB and a 32GB model, and it ships with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI on top of Android 2.2 (Froyo).? No word on pricing yet, but expect the Tab to come out in Europe in September, and in the states sometime after that

Google Discussing Streaming Movie Rentals with Major Studios

August 30, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

Google has been quietly dabbling in streaming movie rentals since the beginning of this year. YouTube’s repertoire of rentable movies continues to grow at a steady pace, but the service commands little attention. That is likely to change in the next few months as big G plans to add streaming movie rentals from major film studios to its catalog, according to a Financial Times report that cites several sources familiar with ongoing negotiations between Google and the movie studios. The plan is to launch the streaming movie rental service, or more accurately its expanded avatar, in the US first, before offering it to the rest of the world. New titles will be available for streaming at the same time as their Blu-ray and DVD releases, with each movie rental costing $5. If none of the movies in YouTube’s current catalog impress you, or if you live in a country where the service is currently unavailable, then you could consider scouring its Movies channel , a repository of free streaming movies that recently received a massive shot in the arm through partnerships with movies studios like Lionsgate, MGM and Sony Pictures
